Anybody know of a natural brick toner, to darken color a bit?

I saw on HGTV where they mixed paint with a lot of water and used it to tone down new bright bricks. I would test it on an inconspicuous area first.

One trick is to dilute roofing tar with enough solvent to make a stain.
