I feel well qualified to give my answer based on FACT, rather than something that you just read in a history book, because I was actually present & living in Los Angeles when the so-called radical peoples movement started. Power to the People gave way to The Black Power Movement when the Media started to label everyone & assign them a LABEL! The Peoples Liberation Movement was re-labeled as the Peoples Liberation Army after some protestors fought back with force & injured the Authority Figures that were using physical force at a peaceful rally in a Public Arena. Everyone decided to choose sides to ensure their safety & others chose sides based on race & personal preference. The biggest difference between the Black Panther Party & other groups was the simple fact that they would not & did not openly consort with any race other than their own & they were militant because they felt it was their calling & their passion based on the amount of bias they had been forced to suffer in their lives at the hands of other races (mainly white). The Black Power Movement was different because whites could (& did) openly march in the streets to let the world know that they were no longer going to carry on the traditional hatred & separation of their ancestors & henceforth the black fist that was their logo became the black & white hands clasped together in a bond to show a united front of the races, which was intended to send the government leaders the message that they now had their own kind to deal with & the black man was not alone in their fight for freedom! Later that same fist was used by the media for the freedom movement that was to be met in the middle & assigned the name the Women's Liberation Movement (with a clenched white fist!) I hate to say it, but we were all taken for a ride by the people who had a vision & a lot of funding to use against the original movement that was invisioned only to be used to help the poor & feed the people of the earth! They didn't count on many of us pulling out of our drug-induced comas & growing up to do much to save the world! Many of the Black Panthers were working with the Weathermen to destroy the power structure of the American System by destruction of the buildings that housed vital paperwork & records. I'm glad to have my memories of these events. Sadly, the "movement" was hurt by the media & the ACLU that is making a mockery of freedom.
