When I try to defragment my hard disk, I get a message 'defragmentation could not start'. Using Windows 2000. Have done disk cleanup and have lots of space free. Anyone have any ideas to help me here?

This might help you.. If you want to defragment then follow these steps (keeps your computer clean)
1. Clear the IE history
2. Go to c:\windows\temp and delete all the files and folders present. (These are temporary files and can be deleted without any worries.). Before that, stop all the non system apps running in the system tray.
Once you are done with this..
restart the computer and start the windows in Safe Mode.
3. Now, try defragmenting. This should work

Thanks

Possible help would be to download another defrager like "power defrag" . The windows defrager stops when it detects any change at all to the data on the Hard Drive and restarts a few seconds later. A couple more options would be to start defrag in safe mode or goto the start-up menu and shut down all programs which aren't needed during defrag .
Good Luck.

The only way to defrag any Windows hosted system is to bootup the system with With 2000 or WinXP CD and follow the only instructions.

Please make sure you have backed up your personal data like photos, documents, pictures, emails etc. Defrag and format will ensure everything is wiped clean including any viruses you may have accumulated over the years.

If you have a floppy drive then you can use Win98 startup disk to do exactly the same thing. You can download Win98 startup disk from online sites.

Hope this helps.

Install Norton System Works (any version) this has a Defragmention Programme in it. Do a clean up then Defrag. Also I use a programme first called "Clean up", this finds and deletes more files than any other programmes. GOOGLE for it it is FREE.

You say you have 'lots of space'..... is that in Gb or a % ??
you need at least 15% of the disc free in order to de-fragment under win2000 (and xp).

This is a common bug - or virus attack point that 2000 has. I really don't know what you can do I never fixed the problem.
