I plan on returning it...i know they're expensive...but legally, could i keep it?

No. Legally you could not keep it, as it could not be considered abandoned property, just misplaced. The hard-working mechanic who left it there most likely had to pay for it out of his own pocket & not having that piece of equipment is interfering with his ability to get his job done. Do the right thing and take it back - you know you'll feel better about it & you'll help out the guy who inadvertently left it in your car.

This is not a legal question but a moral one. You know what it is, where it came from and probably who left it. You know what to do.

If you give, sell or otherwise transfer it, then it becomes a legal issue.

Besides, what could or would you do with it?
