His tank is a 4 gallon filtered globe. He's alone. His ammonia level has been very high. Could this be due to stress from not being in the right type of tank? Should he have a different shape of tank? Or is this just normal territorial behavior?

Good work! Nice to see a question about a betta that dosn't sound like "can i keep my betta in 50mls of water in the bottom of my shoe with no heater or filter."

First of all activity in a betta is a good thing. It means he is warm and happy. Good to see you have gone to the effort of filtering his water, That will go a long way towards keeping him healthy.

I'd suggest that the water has ammonia in it due to the tank being new, as a result the tank is not yet "cycled" this is where bacteria build up in the filter that convert ammonia to less harmful substances. During this time DO NOT clean the filter and in future when cleaning the filter do it only in aquarium water drained from the tank and lightly rince it so as not to kill the bacteria in it.

Also do small water changes every 3rd day using a mini gravel vaccum to get the stuff out of the gravel. never strip the whole tank, this leads to the baccteria dying and an ammonia spike.

Look up "cycling fish tanks" on google to clarify what i mean.

Your going well, concider a mini heater for your betta to keep him 100% happy.

Usually betas are not very active when they are alone in small bowls or aquariums. If he is new then he should probably calm down in a couple of days. Try getting a bigger aquarium with some sword tails, guppies or barbs. Make sure none of them look like him ;), and also if he behaves weirdly anymore you should get bettamax. Make sure to feed him the right kind of betta food.

i don't think his swimming around is a problem. atleast he's swimming. i get worried because a lot of times, mine is very still. Remember to keep his ammonia down tho.... don't want to hurt him.

Put him in a vase then he can swim up and down.
