Many people criticize the electoral vote, as if it's "rigging the system" against us, or whatever.
I used to think the same thing.
In reality, our founding fathers were brilliant, because what it does, is ensure that states that have small populations, don't end up being ignored in elections, law, funding, etc.

In other words, if we had strictly majority rules (some call democracy, others call it mob rule), then the largest states like California & NY would be all that the politicians would care about, since most of their votes would come from those states.
The smallers states would be completely ignored, not just during elections (who cares!), but in laws made, emergency funds handed out, etc.,
In other words, the worst of democracy would rear it's ugly head. Nobody talks about the evils of democracy, but they're there.
That's why we are NOT A DEMOCRACY, WE'RE A REPUBLIC.
Big difference!

The Electoral vote is for the election of the President, the Popular vote is to see who really liked that person across the landscape, or more to the Truth, in the most populated states.
The Electoral vote ensures that EVERY state, even the little small ones with a smaller population base is not over looked for the states with a Bigger population, to ensure equal representation.
The Popular vote is so everyone can see how well each candidate did on expressing his/her views across the country, but it deceiving, because the population bases is different in each state....but it does give the news media something to talk about until they know who won the election, and then something to complain about when their person didn't win by the electoral laws.

The popular vote determines who chooses the electors and who the electors will vote for.

In many states, the electors are bound by law to vote for the candidate who won the popular vote in that state.

It aids the members of the Electoral College in deciding who to vote for, although they are not required to vote according to the majority. This is a superior system to a democracy since it protects the minority and every democracy in history has failed.
