The store/restaurant/manager needs to know you're dissatisfied...they can't fix a problem they know nothing about.

Depends on how bad it was. Mostly I've had waiters or waitresses who were young and I could tell they were trying but just didn't get it yet. I can tell the differnence between someone who is still learning and someone who doesn't give a damn. If they're new, I cut them some slack. And if the food is bad, i just never go back again. Now, If i get something that is not what I ordered (i.e. medium when I ordered it well done), I send it back. After all, Im paying for it. But if it's a combination of pissed-off service and bad food, I let them know and never come back.
Fast food places... I just bring the stuff back to the counter and tell them what's wrong and wait until they get it right. The worst is drive through though. I usually don't find out they f*cked up until I get home, and I don't feel like going back. I just never order from/go to that place again.,

Fast Food? no, let it go. The turn around is so fast that most employees don't have a chance to get really good.

Service is something I am mindful of at a restaurant. My sister was in the restaurant business for many years and I have sympathy for the waiters and waitresses. If the food is not as I requested I will have it fixed, but I always give a good tip good service or bad.

I will complain if the bathroom is out of order or smelly. This is not tolerable to me.

I try my best to understand a situation like "bad service"from the point of view of the waitress or waiter, so most of the time I will let it go, as much as I would like to say something, I dont because I know what it is like to have a tough day, or to be really busy, but dont get me wrong, once or twice the service has been so bad I accually made a scene, which I felt bad about, but you know, sometimes I get amazed by how rude, lazy or just stupid they can be, although this is rare.

They have to be doing a really, really, really crappy job for me to say something. I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt, like a bad day or a bad prior customer. However, if the performance calls for it, I will do something, whether it's a complaint form or not giving a generous tip that I usually do (I will give them something, but it will be towards to lower scale of acceptable tip percentages). I don't recall ever calling a manager over to complain.

Complain because it infuriates me. But I don't complain until after I have eaten because I would probably get something nasty in my food. I don't mind if the staff are busy and maybe rushed or they forget something, but I do totally mind if they are rude, ignorant, surly or if they are inattentive towards me when they have nothing else to do. I once sat in a pile of plates (starters, main course, side plates and dirty glasses) while the staff cleaned an empty table next to me instead of clearing my stuff away. I was annoyed because I was paying a lot of money but my comfort was being ignored

At a sit-down restaurant, I complain.

At a fast-food joint, I know them poor little suckers (especially the little overwhelmed teenagers) are doing the best they can, and if they don't totally ruin my order, I just let it slide.

I used to supervise teenagers, and they were on the verge of tears so often, I felt bad for them and I'd do what I could to calm them down.

Don't hurt the poor little boogers! Mind their little feelings!

But if somebody's a flaming a sshole, get a manager. The manager probably doesn't realize what's going on.

COMPLAIN, its the waiter/waitress' job to serve you. If the order was wrong or the food satisfactory, they are not doing their job which is what you are paying for. Granted there can be many reasons on why a order was wrong or just plain bad, but constructive criticism is better than none, that's how the restaurant becomes better. Its kind of like learning from your mistakes.....

If you were the owner and put your life's savings into a restaurant, wouldn't you like to know if the service was bad? Many businesses close down due to poor customer service.

Haven't you ever seen the movie "Waiting"?

"don't **** with people who serve you your food"

it's a good rule of thumb...

everyone is entitled to a bad day, so don't make a big fuss about it. Unless you were personally insulted or mischarged, just let it go.
