F.ag and Gay both come from a Yiddish word - "Feygellah"

It literally means "little bird" - but has been used for a long time to mean an effeminate man.

Ironically, I have no idea where "dyke"comes from -although I have long thought it had something to do with the story of that little Dutch boy: on the grounds that only a VERY brave male would try sticking his finger in one..

Fa.g, or *******, means "bundle of sticks". those accused of homosexual acts were burned at the stake in England a long time ago, just like so-called witches were.
It also means a silly person, old woman, or cigarrette in Britain.

Dyke comes from Dike, which was the Greek goddess of moral (human) justice. She was born human, but made a god.
Dyke was originally a derogatory term, but was changed to mean "tough" or "assertive", or just plain "lesbian" with no positive or negative denotations.
Dyke also means "ditch" which could represent female parts.

I can give you a speculation regarding the f*g*ot word
As you probably know, a f*g*ot is a small bundle of wood for stoking fires (from this usage, cigarettes are called f*g*ots or fags in parts of great britain) Anyway - at a time, homosexuals were burned at the stakes and the court would order "Get the F*g*ots" meaning get the wood ready to burn this homosexual. From that usage, gays have been called "f*g*ots" for many many years.

the word ****** originally meant a bundle of sticks to be used in a fire. Since a pack of cigarettes sort of resembles a ****** the British shortened it to fag. As in can I bum a fag off of you. I dont know when this word became symbolic with gay men. as for dyke- I havent a clue

hmm, not in an etymological sense no, but i do know that a fag is a cigarette in Britain and a Dyke (or dike) is either 1) a diagonal wire cutter, or 2) a dam (example: there is a hill, man-made that was built right up agains the river to keep it from flooding into my town, we call it a dike)

In the inquisition of Europe, when witches were
being burned, among those sought out for
burning were gay people. They were required to
gather the very "bundles of sticks" (the real
meaning of a ******) with which they would be
burnt. When the ******* (sticks) were running
out, gay men were thrown on the fire to keep it
going for the witches. ****** came to mean gay
man to force them into the closet for fear of
death.
