If the taking of the pap smear and doing the pelvic exam hurts it does so for 1 of 3 reasons:

1. being tense (due to nervousness which is understandable for first time experiences which is why it is important to try and relax when getting this done)

2. The dr is too rough (and if this is the case you can ask them to stop)

3. There is something wrong going on such as an infection

The special instrument used to look inside at the reproductive organs is called a speculum and looks a lot like the bill of a duck. Many drs' offices use plastic ones so temperature should not be a problem. If they do use metal ones (these are the ones that can get cold when left out to feel the effects of the temperature in the room) you can ask them to warm it up before it is inserted so that it's not a shock to the system.

The pap smear only takes a couple minutes to do. The dr (or nurse practicioner, midwife if they are part of a dr's practice) will take a special brush to scrape the cells and put them on a slide to send off to the lab for analysis to make sure that those cells are not abnormal (meaning something wrong). The results will come back in about 4 weeks although I did have it come back in about a week one time.

Before having anything done let the dr's office know that you would like to talk to the dr in your regular clothes first because you are very scared to have this done. A really good dr will not mind doing this, and also when they do get ready to do this test they will explain everything they are doing as they do it so that you will feel a little more comfortable.

They will collect a few cells from your cervix for a test called a Pap test. To do this, the clinician will collect the cells first with a brush and then with a curved (but not sharp) piece of wood. You may feel crampy and uncomfortable for a moment when the brush touches your cervix, but it will take just a few seconds. The cells will be checked at a laboratory for evidence of cancer. This part of the exam is very important because your clinician can not only see if you have cervical cancer now, but also, sometimes, whether you need to be treated to prevent you from getting cancer in the future.

the speculum is cold usually but it doesn't hurt. When your dr. takes a sample it might hurt just slightly, like a pin prick..and for like a second. However, I don't remember it hurting at all until after i had kids. The good from the pap smear FAR outweighs the hurt of having the test. its very important to have.

Well if you're old enought to be getting a "pap" then do it, yes it hurts just a tiny bit but lasts only a few seconds, but wouldn't you rather put up with a little pain to find out if you have cervical cancer?

The Pap smear is a little uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt.

It's uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt. Your doctor will probably remind you to relax your mind and your muscles during the exam so it's not too terrible. It's usually over pretty fast.

i was terrified as well! but it was really fast...like 10 sec! altho there was a bit of discomfort it didnt hurt. i looked at it this way: the doctor has done it a million times, your vagina is not the first!

Think cramps....thats what it feels like. Its uncomfortable but I wouldnt say that it hurts, and its over very quickly. You might 'spot' a little afterwards but its ok. Your Dr. will explain all of it. Dont worry.

You will feel a little pressure. It will be uncomfortable. But it won't hurt... Just be relaxed when you go in there. I would highly recommend getting one even though you don't like doctors.
