There are a lot of Nursery's that sell them started in any sizes to take the work out of doing it yourself, They can be started from the pine-cones and it takes a lot of doing when you can just buy them so cheap at a supply garden.

the above is right. Pines are grown from seeds which are found inside the cones. If you find cones open, then the seed is already gone.
You'd have to find the cones as they are ripening but not open, they could still be on the tree. Ripeness is difficult to determine.
Then the seeds must be removed from the cone, cleaned and then treated, that is cold stratified. Below is just one site where they mention the process.

If you have an acre of land, the your State Forestry department may have a seedling tree program where you can buy year old seedlings.......cheap. It's worth looking into, but the selection is often limited.

It's really not worth the trouble starting them from seeds. Nursery pine trees are cheap and will have a much higher survival rate. Most of these trees are started and rooted from cuttings. So they are all clones from a high quality tree. Here in MI every april the state sells small pines for almost nothing. It is a state sponsered effort to forest the land.

Pine cones contain the seeds.
Dig the seeds out of a pine cone, plant them and grow the sapling indoors until it is large enough to transplant outside (maybe a couple of years).
Pinion pine seeds (called pignoli, or pinion nuts are delicious, btw).

YOU don't want to grow pine trees! They only make pretty furniture. They are pretty much useless other then for furniture and even then they are a soft wood and scratch and break easily. Grow oak or cherry or maple trees. At least you can burn them for wood if nothing else.
