I'm Natural and I get my hair braided and it costs between $135-$200 to get it done. When I used to relax, it would cost me $60 every 6 weeks at the salon or my mom would do it for free.

Yeah, professional braiding is kind of expensive, depending on how much each type of stylist charges (relaxing stylist, and braiding stylest), it could be even more than getting it relaxed.

I think that if you are going to go natural, it's worth the investment to learn about alternatives to professional braiding with synthetic hair. I've been in 4 different situations before, purchasing and putting the relaxer in myself, getting my hair professionally relaxed, getting it professionally braided, and now, doing natural styles on my own.

I recently braided up my natural hair, and am waiting for it to loc up. I may have to take it down and rebraid it though, because this the first time it did it on my own, I had never done it before, and I think I can do it better now that I know how.

But if I had to choose between getting it professionally relaxed and getting it professionally braided, personally, I would pay the extra $$ and get it braided professionally. Every kind of relaxers leave awful painful burn scabs in my head, and it's too much trouble for me to "do" every day. I like being carefree. Plus, I've seen too many poor souls end up nearly bald in the emergency room because they had a sudden allergic reaction to the relaxer they had basically been getting from childhood up. There are a whole bunch of hidden dangers in relaxers, and I don't need all of that to feel beautiful. I applaud you for having the courage to go natural.

It's a toss up because braids last for a max. of 4 months and with a perm you gotta do it every 6-8 weeks. But if your looking at budget wise I'll say it's about the same because the cost of braids is spanned out for 4 months while a perm is every 2 weeks. Also, it takes more oils, and stuff to maintain a relaxed hair.

Well, I'm white, but when I was living in the dorms at college, I'd see black women hot-combing their hair (what a chore! At least they had each other for some company! But I'd probably set up a TV or something--it took so LONG!)

They had natural hair--no relaxers OR braids. And there's always natural styles that don't involve pressing or whatever.

Like, there was this chick who had a huge Afro, and she wore shirts all the time that said, "AFRO-DITE" on the back (she played sorority sports and stuff.)

So you could go that route, too.

You oughta check out the book "Curly Girl" by Lorraine Massey. It might give you some options you hadn't really thought of before.

It sure changed my curls!

At the moment braids cost more but in the long run relaxed hair builds up so relaxed hair is much more expensive.

For me, relaxing was more expensive but maintaining natural hair is less expensive for me. I hated having a relaxer and getting my scalp fried. I never understood why women of African descent but that crap in there hair. My family made me do it because of their ignorance...I was young and naive. I always thought that natural hair was beautiful. Now that I'm grown and I have learned the negativity that society has taught the black woman, I now teach my family about it and others too. I love rocking the fro!

my experience has been Natural hair costs more. i get a $5 relaxer every 6-8 weeks. i get some moisturizing lotion and setting lotion for the rare occasion when i curl it. thas it.

my sister has natural hair. shes got twice as many products to keep it soft moisturized curly and maintained. not to mention products to slick it back and wax when she wants to flat iron it. her hair is soft and curly and pretty but she spends at least $30 a month on products.

my mom went natural for a period and switched back cuz she didnt like all the maintenence invloved with natural hair. its more work than it seems at least with my kinda hair.

confident they are going to enhance your hair. the only component in African American hair products that are diverse then others is the hair rest medical care. it will make your hair certainly comfortable and lightweight weight. by way of fact African American hair is plenty denser the the trouble-free woman that is form of greater "heavy accountability" meaning it will be harsher on your hair yet in ordinary terms in a favorable way.
