I would reword as such. Your second sentence I don't understand. It seems incoherent to me. Seems like you made a comma splice error, but I don't know much on your topic so I can't rework it.

Take "eventually" out of there: "...4 republics, and by 1956,..."

They sound ok, the second sentence is a little too extensive
