I don't use them. They are generally (in common parlance) considered vulgar and insulting.

For non-gay people or those not in the community to use it, it would strongly depend on the context. But generally, no.

Within the group, I think it's much more acceptable, but usually only if you know everyone within hearing distance won't be offended by it.

Personally, I think if it's said in all loving nature (versus to be insulting, derogatory, or cruel), then it's all good, but you should be respectful when speaking and make sure the people around you don't have other ideas about the words. Obviously, it upset your teacher, so it just depends on context, regardless of the fact that you were kidding.

Hope that helps.

I, personally, don't like the word f@g or dyk3. They have been used as slanderous and degrading terms. To me, it's just as bad as the usage of the 'N' word WITHIN the black community. It doesnt make it right just because both of us are black to use that word on eachother. It's ridiculous and ignorant.
So i dont prefer to use or be called a dyk3. If your friend is okay with being called a f@g, so be it.

Even joking, would you call a Jewish person a kike? or a Black individual the "n" word? The words you use are meant to be demeaning and are only used by those who are not open minded toward these groups. Anyone using the "n" word is a racist. Anyone using your words is anti gay. Anyone used the "k" word is antisemitic. Yes, I would discourage using those terms, even in jest. You will eventually really hurt or anger someone without meaning to, and then try to explain that you were joking.

The word holds little power for me The word Dyke has a very positive association for me... I think of self confident, healthy, attractive women.

I find it hilarious that people think calling me a fhag is insulting. Ok.... I have hazel eyes too... want to take a shot at that? It's just ridiculous.

I guess for some people, it could be the sexual equivalent of the "n" word. But if your teacher is straight, then he or she probably is just somewhat homophobic. If none of the above are true, then maybe you spoke in tongues like that girl in the Exorcist. ; )

nope, but there's this word P.D. in french for homosexuals, and it actually says pederast. I don't use that one anymore.

So I guess it depends where fag and dyke come from.
