Well, you might try installing an Infra-Red, motion sensitive flood lamps near this area with an audiable alarm. I have this setup to monitor the front walkway to my front door. The alarm goes off when they get about 30 feet from the front door. The alarm itself is usually a deterent, but I get up and look outside anyway. The bright flood lamps light up the whole area also. So far, only cats and dogs have set it off. I took care of that with an ultra-sonic alarm next to the flood lamps. No more animals get close enough now.

How about replacing your window? Beyond that, maybe you can mount a video camera in the ceiling. Even if it's a fake, and if it's visible enough, it should be enough to scare away the amateur burglars. The pros won't care - but then again, they would come in anyway, broken window or not.
You could always put in a motion detector floodlight. It would sure alert you with the light when someone comes into it's field of view...

Or do you mean catch yourself...in a lawsuit should someone get hurt(that includes the crook). They aren't a crook till they have actually done something. A dog works so long as the dog cannot bite anyone.

A trip string, possibly fishing line tied to bottles and cans at the top of the stairs filled with marbles. Have trip line at knee high height, the noise should alert you and the marbles could slow him down and hurt him.

Decide on what you want to do. Do you want to just scare them or do you want to be able to tell who it is? There are so many different ways of ding this, and you can take your pick. The motion activated porch light may be the best deterrent and a web cam tied to your computer or even a VCR would record who it was. Good luck
