Washing soon after using helps as the starchy foods tend to leave a residue that is tough to get off. With the wire strainers, I turn them over and slap them on the counter to dislodge the gunk. I don't remember colander problembs, maybe I ought not look too closely.

Dishwasher does a good job. If you had wash, when you rinse do it from the back side, give it a good shake,or tap it against your hand upside down. I have a metal and a plastic one the plastic is easier to clean.

Immediatey after use I always turn it up side down in the sink and spray it with the sprayer, if you don't have one, running under the water upside down should work too. I never have a problem with stuck on food.
