Well first you need talent, and then you need experience.

Start with acting classes. Most schools noramlly have a drama department, so you might want to start there. If not, then look into local acting schools. Also try community theater, it gives you experience. I myself am 21, I live in California and I've just started going on community theater auditions. Look through local newspapers to see if any local theaters are auditioning. Some acting schools can set you up with an agent. NEVER spend money upfront on an agent...9 times out of ten it's a scam and you'll never get any work. Agents take between 10%-15% of your pay usually. But just start going to community theater auditions, school auditions...etc. for experience and try taking classes. That way you can start building a resume for agents, schools and casting directors to look at.

I would suggest starting with community theatre. The more experience you have, the better chance you have. Get out there and get the most experience that you possible can. Also, try to find an acting class (or a few if you have the funds), and if you're into musical theatre then I would recommend getting a voice teacher and/or voice coach as well.

Start by taking any and all drama classes you can. This is the first thing any actor will tell you. Then, when you're ready, try for local community theater parts. When you've accomplished that, they should be able to direct you to bigger and better parts. Make sure you're able to take constructive criticism. If you listen, you can learn from it. You're lucky you live in New York. You have access to great drama schools and acting opportunities.
