Well that depends on what the tennis shoe is being worn for, if it's merely a fashion statement I go for Skechers they have the best colors. The last pair I bought had this blue sparkly strip at the bottom, very chic.
Now comfort is a different story I have a very worn pair of Converse tenny's that I kick around in, just the same old black with white soles, comfy and they still look great with jeans. Durability you say, Nike and Adidas last longer than tennis shoes should due to the stink factor.

Haven't owned a pair since 1977, the last time I had to wear them for high school gym. The ones I left in my gym locker are my favorite pair.

my saucony shadows are no doubt the most comfortable kicks i've ever owned for just getting around town. unfortunately they just stopped making them. why, saucony? why? (they still make the jazz, but it's not the same.)
as for exercising (running, mainly) i also use saucony--but the real running shoes. the grid stabils are pretty solid.
if you suffer from peroneal tendonitis (that's the tendon that runs down the outside of your calf and hooks around the bottom of your ankle bone) definitely avoid new balance shoes. the back is too high on virtually all of them--it hits that tendon and makes the problem worse.

I would say Vans or Rhinos. I'm a major punk, so I love skateboarding shoes.

I really like Sketchers for just kicking around in. For power walking, I like Reebok.

Nike (not just for brand, but I've come to realize that they're more comfortable than anything and they last for years...)
