purex - try using a different fabric softener or fabric softer sheets... that's what makes the biggest difference really with the smell of your clothes... if not it could be the water or how you dry your clothes.... the detergent does not make a difference.... i used to use detergents with no perfumes and smells b/c of allergies... but used just fabric softener sheets for smell.... and it helped... then once the drier at my condo was messed up... and b/f they fixed it my clothes smelled like nothing much.... i found out the dryer just was not hot enough and it was taking forever to dry... and they fixed it... my clothes smelled 'pretty' and not plain!

I get the least expensive laundry dry detergent (like Arm & Hammer) and use the better softener. I also wash differently, in that, I wash like regular round #1, then I look and see if there are still suds at the top of the wash before the rinse cycle begins.
If theres light bubbles, I had enough soap to wash everything.
If it's dirty and no suds, then I re-run the wash cycle. The second time, I only put in 1/2 of the amount I used with the first time at washing the load.
Then, I allow the load to get done & rinse.
I re-start the rinse cycle again, and this time I add the softener.
Then I'm done.

If especially nasty load, I add 1 cup of white distilled vinegar with the dry detergent.
Sometimes, I will toss in a softener cloth in the dryer, for added aroma.

Tide is the best detergent on the market and has been for a long time, although it does cost more than other brands. All the Tides are good but if you use the one with Downy, be careful about using very much liquid Downy as this can cause a build up on your clothing.

I only use Tide liquid. I don't think other clothes smelling better has much to do with the detergent. You might not get your clothes dry enough and they will have a musky smell. Also, your personal body odor can easily overpower the smell of your clothes. Check into those and maybe your clothes will smell like other people's.

I only use Tide with bleach mountain fresh scent. I also use Biz to help with any stains I missed but the real trick is the fabric softener....we use Downy simple pleasures, the vanilla and lavender one. That makes our laundry smell wonderful =)

it depends on what type of scent you like, and it may be their fabric softner you smell and not the detergent because they have so many out now with different scents, like lavender and rose etc.

I like fresh smell on clothes better then floral etc though and i use gain-not the fruity aplle mango etc but just the regular scent and they make dryer sheets also
