Are you in the US?
Google as a free software that will let you send SMS messages to phone numbers in the US. It is called "google send to phone" and is installed as an "extension" to the firefox browser. It is pretty neat in that you type the message using the computer keyboard. And if the message exceeds a single SMS message capacity (which is only 128 characters), the program automatically breaks up the message into multiple SMS messages.
