What is the answer to (a+5b)to the 2nd power? When you multiply 5b and a using F.O.I.L. do u get 5ba squared or 5 b squared a squared? Does the variable on the first term come first like 5b * a ( b would come first then a). ???????????

think of it this way...
(a + 5b)(a +5b)
a^2 + 5ab + 5ab + 25 b^2
a^2 + 10ab + 25 b^2

(a + 5b)² = (a + 5b)(a + 5b). So using F.O.I.L. you multiply the first (F) terms in each pair, add to that the product of the outside (O) terms, plus the product of the inside (I) terms, plus the product of the last terms (L). You get:
a² + a5b + 5ba + (5b)² = a² + 10ab + 25b².
I think a better way to do this is to treat one of your terms as a single variable, then use the distributive rule:
(a + 5b)(a + 5b) =
(a + 5b)a + (a + 5b)5b =
(a² + 5ab) + (5ab + 25b²) =
a² + 10ab + 25b²
The advantage of doing it this second way is that it doesn't matter how big your other terms are. That's because "Foil" unfortunately only works when you have two groups of two terms you're multiplying together.

FOIL is First Outer Inner Last
so it would be
a+5b times a+5b
so first: 2a
outer: 5ab
inner: 5ab
last: 5bsquared
so its 2a+10ab+5bsquared
then just solve

(a+5b)² means (a+5b)(a+5b). Then FOIL.
To FOIL:
a² + 5ab + 5ab + 25b²
Simplify:
a² + 25b² + 10ab (This the is the correct answer.)

Change (a+5b)^2 into (a+5b)(a+5b). Use FOIL:
a^2+5ab+5ab+25b^2 = a^2 + 10ab + 25b^2.

(x + y)^2
(x + y) (x + y)
X^2 + xy +yx + Y^2
FOIL = First Out In Last.
Multiply the first 2
then the Outer two
then the Inner two
then the last of the two.
