also.. people have mentioned strings and wires... ? ... i was under the impression that mirena was kind of like the old "copper cross", just a plastic "T" that fits into your uterus... why would there be any strings or wires? now i'm confused.

I have the Mirena IUD. I got it after my first child was born a little over 2 years ago. It's a plastic T shaped IUD and it has two thin, barely noticeable wires attached to the end. They are there so that if there is ever a need to remove it (including after the five years it lasts for), it is easily accessible. Any OB/GYN should know what you're talking about if you ask for the Mirena IUD. It lasts for up to five years and personally, I can't even feel mine. There's some strong cramping for a few minutes immediately after you get it put in, but I had no problems after that, and that was no worse than a menstrual cramp. There are possible side effects from it, just like with any other, but I chose this one because I've always had really painful periods, and this suppresses them, without any long-term effects, and I could breastfeed with it in, unlike most. Also, you have the same chance of getting pregnant immediately after removing it as you would if you hadn't been on any birth control at all. I love mine.

I had an IUD for five years, until about two years ago when I found out I was pregnant, so of course I had it removed. Now I have a beautiful daughter. So mine was a surprising, but wonderful experience.
There's string kind of like fishing line that comes from the bottom of the "cross", you are supposed to check this string regularly to make sure it's still in properly. Some people say (my hubby included) that you can feel this string during sex. You can have the strings trimmed, although there has to be at least some there, for the checks, and for your doctor to be able to remove it.

I have had it for the last 3 1/2 years. Sex can sometimes be painful because of the wire or something I guess. But I haven't had a period (or what I would consider one) in the 3 years either. The most my period ever is, is cramping and maybe a panty liner with some spotting. { Sorry to be detailed, but you asked! :) } I also love not having to worry about B/C everytime my hubby and I are intimate... after all, that's how we ended up with the 2 that we have. (Don't get me wrong, they were BLESSINGS in disguise!!!!)

I got the mirena free from the clinic. I had a horrible experience because at first your vagina will try to expel any weird objects. Then after the 6 months of pain that the dr. said was normal, I started having shred of bloody flesh come out after intercourse. I took it out asap!

Mirena is very good you do not need to pay just go along to your local family planning clinic for advice and information before you decide.
