can anyone either find a website that compares the Loma Prieta earthquake to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake or give info please and thank you

I don't have the website, sorry. An author wrote a book on it in October of 2006 for the anniversary of both.

Actually I can tell you all about it if you want to email me. The Main problem with the 1906 was there being no water pressure, as most of the buildings were made of wood the fire was the worst problem.

With Loma Preita who's epicenter was 75 miles from SF, the main problem in the city itself was liquifaction in the Marina District. The freeway and bridge issues were because the seismic retrofit was not completed yet. Building damage was minimal though falling facades killled several. The buildings in the Marina district completely collapsed because the sub structure liquified.

The big deal in 1989 was the ground shaking. Because of the very weak sediments in the Bay Area, especially in the Marina District, the shaking gets amplified and the damage gets worse. Some places are just bad for shaking.
