It's called swaddling. You just have to make sure it's snug and the baby's nose isn't covered.
If it's a loose blanket, no.

You don't want to use a blanket on an infant unless you are securely swaddling them. They make blankets especially for swaddling but the only one that worked for us was the Miracle Blanket.
Always make sure the blanket is away from the baby's face and once again, only use them for swaddling.
Most babies love to be swaddled up until about 4 months. Swaddling our 6-week old made her go from sleeping 3 hours straight at night to 6 hours!

Its called swaddling. Baby's love to be wrapped up tight it makes them feel secure because inside our tummy's they are all snug. When they are newborns they are not in control of their nerves so their little arms and legs jerk around and this does scare them and make them feel unsafe and it can keep them awake or wake them if they are asleep, they should of showed you this in hospital. If not then ask your midwife service or clinic i am sure they will help you. good-luck with the new baby. ******** Erorc if this is her first baby it is hard to know what to do all the time whats wrong with asking people for advice i am sure if you were left with a newborn by yourself you would question yourself to

Newborns love to be wrapped but just don't put the blanket over the face.

My daughter didnt like to be swaddled, but a friend of mine swears by the "Swaddlers" wraps you can buy at Babies R Us and most other stores. I used the Halo Sleep sack.

My youngest son was swaddled for the first three months, he slept better that way. Now my oldest son hated it, he liked to fling out his arms and legs and would fight the blankets that were just laid on top of him even.

Yes, it usually helps infants sleep a lot better. It helps their arms from moving uncontrollably.

You're going to ask a bunch of complete strangers advice on how to safely care for your baby? How do you know you're going to get good advice?
That's so insanely incompetent they should come take the child away RIGHT NOW. Post your address so we can call CPS.
