When I was a kid growing up in the early 70's, my friend's parents had a gadget in the kids' bedroom that they called a 'water cooler.' It was a free-standing electrical appliance that functioned like a portable air conditioner when you POURED WATER INTO IT. As I got older, I thought this was a dangerous combination, but that's what we did to fill up the reservoir & keep the cool breeze coming on a blazing hot summer afternoon. Does anyone remember anything like this? Are they still being manufactured?

the 'evaporative cooler' or 'swamp cooler' as they are also known are very popular in dry climates like New Mexico, Arizona and West Texas. As long as the relative humidity is low, they work quite well. If you live in an area where the humidity is over 40 or 50% they just aren't very practical as the water, running over the pads through which the air flows, just won't evaporate fast enough to remove heat from the air. Most are built wirh a water reservoir which is connected to a water line through a float valve. A sump pump recirculates water over the straw pads through which the air flows. Much cheaper way to cool a house than refrigeration when the humidity is low.

Yes there are refered to as "Evaporative Coolers", I have seen window units and also large ones for businesses, some attach to a hose and some have a water container. Great for a garage or workshop.
