There are so many people who are black who aren't of African heritage. Many dark skinned people come from Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, or any of a number of other non-African countries. Also, many people who come from Africa are lighter skinned. Do you think the term African-American is overused?

actually the black people of Jamaican,Haitian and Dominican ancestry are also originally from Africa. they were brought to those countries as slaves to work the sugar plantations during the colonial period. I do agree, however, that African American is overused. I think for the most part after 2 generations you should just call yourself American. the only other group that identifies in this way is Irish Americans . they tend to self identify as Irish even if their last Irish ancestor was 150 years ago.

The black people from Haiti and other such non-African countries originally came from Africa. So if they are clearly not American, they shouldn't be called African American - but if they are here in America and live as Americans, then they are subject to being categorized the same way as others who are of African descent. But the important thing is not to deliberately use any term that is meant to diminish the person's status or value in some way because of their perceived heritage or nationality. (Unless of course they are French.).

Well Dominicans are technically hispanic, however, and I am haitian and I consider myself a haitian american because I am a first generation american. nonetheless, i know that i an not a native haitian because all of them were killed off before africans (current haitians) were place there during slavery so my roots go back to africa as do many of the individuals from carribean islands.

What it all comes down to is that we all have roots tracing back to africa which is why we use the term african american. hope this helps :P
