it never did this before, it is a 1996 Monte Carlo. Everytime i step on accelerate on the gas pedal, i look at the RPM dial and the needle jumps to 3, then the car has these slight jerks and as it jerks, the needle drops from 3 to 2.5 to 2 to 1.5 and then to 1. Someone told me it make be the transmission going out, i hope not becuase i hear they are expensive. Also, after i drive for a few minutes, when i step on the gas pedal, it takes a moment or two for it to speed up (accelerate). Can anyone please help me?

check your transmission fluid level. I had a similar problem that was fixed by ATF fluid, however it turned out i had a bad leak anyway! But definately sounds like transmission problem - it is "slipping" - engine revs but car does not respond or is delayed in response correct?

This could be many problems: If the jerk is in terms of a miss-fire under load (as in acceleration) there is a very strong chance that the fault is electrical in nature and probably connected more to a breakdown in the HT (ignition) side.
If you see smoke from the exhaust then if it is a funny Orange brown colour the chances are the spark plugs are fowled. If yes to this a 'quick fix' is to hold the car in a lowish gear whilst keeping the revs fairly high for a short time. If this works get new plugs ASAP. If the smoke is light grey or blueish tinge the chances are you are burning oil and or water and some surgery needs doing.
If the car is OK at the rest of the time it is unlikely to fuel shortage. However the 'lag' on acceleration is more fuel related and probably fuel filter needs change.

Hi
Just to clear things up, the car jumps slightly and as it does so the revs drop by 500 rpm each time?
It sounds as though the transmission is changing up straight through the gears into top and then staying there which would explain the slow rate of acceleration.
This could be the speed sensor, throttle position sensor, transmission fluid, transmission pump, any number of things.
Maybe you could start with a transmission fluid and filter change and take it from there.
Cheers

I had a similar problem that had nothing to do with the fuel or transmission - just a simple loose connection with the accelerator pedal itself that made it stick. It took just a few minutes to fix.

Check your spark plugs and distributor cap, esp if the "Check Engine" light comes on and flashes when you have this problem. If you floor it when you're trying to get up to speed it should come out of it. We had this too Good Luck

When was the last time you change the fuel filter?
While there are many reasons for experiencing the symptoms you are seeing. The most common causes are fuel and fuel pressure related.
(ie, fuel pump not maintaining pressure, fuel pressure regulator can't maintain pressure, fuel filter preventing fuel pump from maintaining pressure)
