I have been horseback riding all my life, I have had formal training, done showing, and ride both English and Western. Why is it that anymore when a child says that they want a horse their parent just walks out and buys them one! Then the child gets thrown off the horse, and the parents try to blame everyone except themselves and the child!! We had a case of this at a show I was recently at. A friend of mine has a girl at her barn who has never ridden a horse in her life, had NO formal training, but she insisted on getting a horse so her parents went out and got her a 3 year old Arabian gelding who has very little time under saddle, of course the first time she got on him he freaked out because she slammed down into the seat too hard he took off running and bucking she fell off and broke her arm. Now the parents are trying to sue the stable! Is there anyone who understands why parents just go out and buy anything their kids want?

First off, who was the idiot who sold her a 3 year old?????? I have a bone to pick with them. Too bad this is all very common. About every horse person I know could tell you a story like this. For instance, my Arabian gelding I adopted from a rescue. The reason he was there was because some lady thought a young unbroke Arabian was perfect for her FIRST horse. Of course, in the end, he ended up at the rescue. Sad. I think that kid will grow up to be a selfish brat, if she isn't already. Her parents can't even take responsibility, how is the kid ever going to be able to do that in life? Also, what makes me wonders is...Do the parents have a death wish for the child? It could have been much worse. Do the parents not realize how dangerous horses can be a times? Or are they just that stupid. My guess is that they spoil their daughter and just gave the girl what ever she wanted.
I worked my but off for my first horse and then did all the horse chores myself as a kid. I had to work for what I had. My kids will do the same thing if want a horse of their own some day. I know this made me apreciate my horses so much more as a kid. Unlike me and my kids, this brat will never grow up with any sence of responsibility.
I just hope the best for the young 3 year old horse. I hope they don't take the accident out on the horse too! Poor thing!

I think that part of the problem is that they watch experienced riders and think it looks sooooo easy.
Perhaps we should all take that as something of a compliment ?
I know what you are saying - I've seen it several times - some kids are just spoilt and the parents think a good lawyer will solve everything, (unfortunately they also tend to spoil good horses )Not so long ago there were signs all over the place at the local stables reminding everyone that riding is a high risk sport and everyone used to say that if you hadn't fallen off 7 times you weren't a rider.
I don't think there is really an answer to this, some parents will always spoil their kids without thinking about the possible results.

People do that to make their child happy so they don't have to coop with their whining. So the parents buy an abused horse or something and say, here's a horse. Go and ride it and some have never been near a horse. Then the kid falls of and breaks their arm and sue the place form where they bought the horse. If you listen to yourself closely enough, you answered your own question.

They need to sue whoever sold them the horse. No responsible horse person would sell a 3 year old to a rank beginner, or the child's parents who obviously don't know anything about horses.
As for why they got her the horse, it's just stupidity and ignorance. If they're dumb enough not to know horses are dangerous, they're dumb enough to give their child whatever she wants.

Because it shuts the kid up and some parents would rather bribe their children than teach them or discipline them.
I wonder how many parents who jump into buying a horse realize how much it costs to feed, house and keep a horse?

PEOPLE ARE CRAZY THAT'A WHY MY MOM DOES WHAT SHE DOES. MY MOMMY GOES OUT AND LOOKS FOR PEOPLE A HORSE THAT WILL BEST SUIT THEM BUT SHE WILL NOT LET THEM TAKE HOME THE HORSE UNTIL THEY HAVE DONE 3 FORMAL LESSONS ON THAT HORSE OR UNTIL SHE FEELS COMFORTABLE LETING THEM GO ON THE HORSE. I AGEE PEOPLE ARE DUM AND THE DUM ONES USUALLY HAVE MONEY AND DEMANDING KIDS.

I'm afraid that is quite common over here in the UK, as well. I get so frustrated and angry when this happens. When I see questions on here from obviously ignorant pony-owners I could scream!
If you would like an Equestrian/Horse Riding category on here, please go to the Forum, top right-hand corner, and suggest it. Thanks.
