Moles or could be voles. They are related. If you want to get rid of them without hiring an exterminator, just buy some Juicy Fruit gum. Unwrap a few sticks and shove them down the holes. They love to eat it, but can't digest it. It sounds cruel, but it works.

Big holes? Mole or groundhog. Small holes? Probably a snake.

Most likely a mole. They like grubs so if you have a lot of grubs in your yard, thats what it is.
