It is amazing. It is my favorite of all the Disney Resorts. It is like taking an African safari. You wake up and outside your window the giraffe is eatting off a tree and the ostriches are running around. The restaurants inside are probably on the list of best couple food options in all of WDW.
However, as you noticed it is VERY expensive. Most expensive during the week of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. But if you go during the "off season" (Sept, Oct, April, May) you can find a lower rate.
Most of Disney resorts aren't worth the money. The Value resorts (All-Star) are pointless; you could find better prices if you just looked at hotel.com. Moderate resorts (Caribbean, Coronado, French Quarter, Riverside) are ok but I am not sure if merely having a theme is worth the extra money. The only advantage to those is the bus service to the parks. If you are wishing to stay at one of the nicer resorts (Wilderness, Polynesian, Contemporary, Yacht Club, Grand Floridian, BoardWalk, Beach Club, Animal Kingdom) then yes Animal Kingdom and Grand Floridian are the best of all those.
I like the Polynesian--especially for small children that have to go back for a nap. BoardWalk, Beach Club, and Wilderness aren't worth the money (but do eat at the Wilderness--great atmosphere and great food).
I guess it depends on what you are thinking. If you were planning on staying at a Hilton or Sheraton and would probably pay close to $200 a night anyway, then YES AK Lodge is definitely worth it. By far, it is a great place. It is far more adult than kid oriented and I would definitely stay there if it were just my husband and I going down. The restaurants are great. Each day you'll see a different animal. I worked at Animal Kingdom and I took the Safari in Animal Kingdom park at least once a week b/c it was different everytime. Every morning you'll see a different animal up close. Plus you can take the early bus to Animal Kingdom and watch the early morning feeding. While I was there, once a month, we'd eat at one of the restaurants and found that one to be GREAT
If you were planning on staying at a cheaper hotel, something more under $100 a night, you might not find Animal Kingdom Lodge to be worth it. It is expensive for a hotel. It doesn't have much to do with the Disney Theme--I dont think they offer breakfast with the characters like many others do.
But for a resort, AK Lodge is definitely AMAZING!

Jennifer, As the historic knight within the Indiana Jones film stated, "You have selected accurately." The Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Polynesian Resort are the first-class motels at Disney World for households with kids. I pick the Polynesian Resort for households for you to be looking to get again to the inn for leisure. The bus to the Animal Kingdom will take plenty of additional time clear of leisure and journeying. Also the rooms on the Polynesian are one of the crucial greatest at the estate. There are 2 queen beds and an afternoon mattress in every common room. The rooms are drastically better than the ones within the Animal Kingdom. Transportation - the Polynesian is enormously higher for transportation to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot than the Animal Kingdom Lodge. The bus carrier is lovely similar among the 2. If seeing animals is fundamental in your household pick the Animal Kingdom Lodge. If you wish more space and effortless transportation pick the Polynesian Resort.
