And the leap part comes from this. In a normal calendar, a given date, like Jan 1, 2007 is a Monday. The same date the next year is a Tuesday (Jan 1, 2008). But after a leap year, the day leaps, so Jan 1, 2009 will be Thursday, leaping over Wednesday.

A leap year is a year containing an extra day in order to keep the calendar year synchronised with the astronomical/seasonal year. On a Leap year, February would have 29 days instead of just 28. Many different cultures tend to have a different insight on Leap year.

Each year is 365 1/4 days long, so every 4 years there is a year with 366 days to make up for the 1/4 days.
