This spring and summer my husband, daughter and I were going to go fishing. We bought all our stuff and extra fishing line. Well on the box it say the product contains lead, burth defects ya da ya da. Does this mean I cannot go fishing? I mean my building contains lead, my sisters apartments have a warning up.....Should I wear gloves? Can I fish period? Is there lead free line?

Thanks ahead of time. I dont know if there are alot of women who fish on here but thought I would give it a try

Ok no need to be rude. I don't plan on eating the line but I would be in contact with it when I pull fish out of water, take the hooks out etc..There is no way not too touch the line. I am guessing I just need to constantly wash my hands. It says not to breath it in either

I would like to thank the people ahead of time with experience who gave kind advice. I think it is pathetic the people that have to leave sarcastic or hurtful answers. I want do do the best for my child and protect myself as much as possible. Is that so wrong to you??

I love to go fishing too, just went for the first time yesterday as it was finally warm enough here. I just used worms as they don't contain lead. People on here can be so stupid so don't listen to the ignorant ones. My sister fished when pregnant with her son and he is 8 now and fine, a brat but fine. So pretty much do what you want, I know you won't put it in your mouth and things. Also take along some hand sanitizer to use after every time you touch a lure. These are just a few tips, I guess if you really want to call the doc. Anyways have a fun summer and enjoy♥

It's funny how being pregnant makes us read the warning labels on EVERYTHING we pick up, isn't it? :) I find myself checking the labels on just about anything that under normal circumstances I wouldn't.

And I think you can get lead poisoning from things even if you don't eat them. That's why lead paint was such a big controversy...and I'm sure kids weren't going around LICKING the walls. BUT - I'm pretty sure you'd have to have repeated, prolonged exposure to something with an extremely high lead content to get lead poisoning. We have a dock right behind our house into the gulf of mexico and I go fishing to relax on our dock on a regular basis and have done so since I was about 20 weeks pregnant (I'm 37 weeks pregnant now) and I have had no problems.

But for peace of mind, call and ask your doctor. They'll either tell you it's fine or urge you to take certain precautions. Either way - have fun and go enjoy it. It's super relaxing and a great way to stave off the frustrations of pregnancy. At least it was for me!

:) Congratulations and Good Luck!

Hmmm I think you should be fine. I go fishing with my husband all the time! I never read anything about that tho on the fishing line. But just be careful. Maybe you should have your husband pull the line up and unhook the fish. Or just wear gloves.

I understand your concern. I would call the fishing line hot line if they have one on the box. Or call the company you baught it from and ask if they have lead free fishing line. You are a wonderful mom, being so protective of your unborn child. Who would have thought fishing line would contain lead in it?
God Bless and have fun! (As soon as you know what to do!)

I think you can only get lead poisoning if you eat it. If you are concerned though get some different equipment that is lead free. or have your husband thread your line. I am pregnant too and plan to go fishing as much this summer until my little girl gets here in july. fishing is great to do while pregnant its relaxing and you get lots of fresh air.

My entire kinfolk grew up on the coast and ate seafood on a weekly foundation. definite you will possibly desire to stay far off from tuna and different fish severe in mercury yet so a techniques as shellfish, there has in no way been a concern in my kinfolk. i'm 20 weeks pregnant and that i think of that's suitable for eating it. of direction I dont consume it daily yet once or twice each week...is positive!

Well, I never thought of fishing as a dangerous pass time. I would just ask the doctor, however, its a great excuse to get your husband to bait the hook for you ;)

No you aren't wrong to protect you and your unborn, I would play it safe and have someone else bait for you and take the fish off. Then all you have to do is the fun stuff!! Catch a big one!
