I was outside the other day with my dog and he started scratching at the dirt until he broke the surface, then he started biting into the ground like it was an apple! is there nutrients in the dirt they know about or is he just a freak!
Anyone find their dog does this?

My dog does this a good bit. We live way out in the country. Usually my dog does this when he gets excited or is being really playful. Also, sometimes I think he catches the scent of a mole because he goes crazy digging down left and right until he's shoulder deep in the soil. There's nothing wrong with him, he's just happy to be alive! So don't worry, just sit back and enjoy the moment with him just knowing that he's having a good time!

Occasionally I have seen dogs bite the dirt if they are being silly and showing off, but they don't sit and eat dirt, they usually move on to something else .. Is he just laying there eating the dirt?

yes, actually I've seen my dogs lots of times doing this very silly looking act.
what i found out is that when dogs or any animal for that matter is hungry or is lacking a noticeable amount of nutrients or vitamins, they will eat grass, leaves or dirt, which are all full of nutrients.

My dog does this all the time...for several different reasons. One is that she buries her toys and treats and goes back for them later. She also sniffs out stuff that was buried in our yard years ago, that we didn't even know were there...she'll dig a huge hole, then pull out a bicycle tire or some other crazy object. Dogs also dig holes so they can lay inside to regulate their body heat if they get too hot in warm weather.

Nope, no nutrients in dirt. Are you sure he wasn't trying to eat grass? Dogs and cats do this if their stomach is upset, to make themselves vomit.

My dogs do that sometimes when they see a bug dig its way and crawl into the dirt. They are "chasing" the bug. He may be doing that, too.

Maybe he isn't feeling well. Take him to the vet.
