At this point it's very hard to say what will *help*. Absolutely, Rummy made a huge mistake in disbanding the Iraqi army. The insurgency would never have been able to take hold, as it has, if we had held together Saddam's army. They could have identified the Baathists, and dealt with certain individuals, without disbanding the whole damn army. Building a capable (and trustworthy) army from scratch is a long process under the best of circumstances. Trying to do it with the level of insurgency and resulting sectarian violence has been a nightmare so far. They may eventually *get there*, but this is one of the main reasons why the US feels it still needs to be there. I think that's the real reason they disbanded the army . . . so we'd have an excuse to prolong our presense.

Why should the Baathist be allowed to rejoin the goverment? After all, they are very corrup and show no compassion or care to the Iraqi People and will also and they are also lazy incompetent and reckless. Besides, I do not believe that they can be trusted and they will corrupt the goverment.

I think that whatever the Iraqis decide to do is the business of the Iraqis.
Let's see, is it a huge mistake to disband the military of a country that you intend to occupy and let them keep all of their weapons? I think the proof is in the puddin.

Yes - if it happens. The operative phrase here, however, is "help curb the violence" - it will not end it and may not have a significant impact given the fractious nature of the Sunni / Al-Qaeda gangsters.

Rumsfeld had to dissolve the Iraq Army to prov his Transformation Theory.

Rummy worked for years trying to develop a cyborg style super Soldier. His fast attack with a small Army just never worked.

With a small US army you can not take a million man army captive and retrain them. Rumsfeld had to send them home.
