Does it irritate you that student's requesting homework help can't even spell let alone use the spell check before posting their questions? I don't mind giving some tutoring help, but if I can't even read the question because of all the typos then the student is SOL!

I'd argue that it is not that the majority of students are less capable of spelling than the rest of us, but rather the students that do ask for homework help on Yahoo! Answers reflect a small, particular group of students.

If I were a university student preparing an essay about Roussau's "Revolt Against Reason" or the social construction of scientific knowledge, Yahoo! Answers would not serve as a good, reliable or strong source. If you were a student wanting to understand the controversy over gene patents, you'd feel much better reading articles from scientific journals and medical journals.
Most of the students posing questions here are probably in their high school stage or a younger stage; and therefore probably don't realize the importance making their work well-written and coherent.

Asking strangers on Yahoo! Answers is not the best way to ensure a good answer. The students that do ask questions here (ie. such as "how do I write a thesis statement?" or "what is a chromosome?"), may not have a good grasp on or familiarity with their subject.

Another possibility is that the person posing questions haven't been fortunate enough to afford a post-secondary education (which is extremely expensive for the most of us).

Be patient with them and offer a helping hand when you can! They need your help! They're students or others in the preliminary process learning basic things. Hope this helps!

Most younger people can't spell because they spend so much time typing incorrectly online. When a person purposely types or writes incorrectly a majority of the time, being able to type or write correctly when necessary is not likely.

I try to always use proper grammar, correct punctuation, and spell correctly every time I send an email or online message. Most older individuals have been taught to do this. Your questions and answers will be taken much more seriously if they are well written and easy to understand.

I wholly agree, nevertheless I'd must say that humans's loss of grammar knowledge customarily has some thing to do with them getting others to do their homework on-line...... that's why I have a tendency to not reply exact questions. SOmetimes I'll factor to more than a few study choices if the questioner demands the aid, however I am now not going to inform lillte johnny or jane the plot of "To Kill A Mockingbird" on the grounds that they are too lazy to learn it and even hire the film.

One of the answers was because they are dyslexic.............granted that might be the case sometimes, but, NOT 90% of the time.
I think they are in such a hurry to get out the door and be with their friends, that they are careless and worst of all they just take the answers and show utter disregard in taking the time to pick a Best Answer..........failing to get their 3 points for picking Best.
The amount of time that is spent researching the best possible site is worthy of a Best Answer who ever it is.
Last week I ask a question why don't they pic one.
I had 2 answers and a whole lot of rudeness.

I find it really ridiculous in light of the fact that there's a "Check Spelling" link RIGHT IN FRONT of the area where you type the post. If somebody can't be bothered to click on that button and check their spelling, why should I be bothered to help them, let alone for free?

Though even then, a spell check isn't going to correct other problems. It gets really annoying when you're trying to read a problem with no punctuation. Or see people who actually write "pie" instead of "pi".

It could because they get judged all the time on spelling and puncuation at school all the time and every now and then they need a break from making sure every little thing is correct. Just the way that I feel since I am a student

I think these kids are just spending way too much time texting on their cell phones to each other. So, they start using that texting shorthand to get through their question faster instead of taking the time to properly write it out so we understand what they are asking. Unfortunately, not everyone (like me), understands all that texting language. I can't answer a question if I have no idea what they are asking.

Yes! It drives me nuts! It's been proven that since kids have their own cell phones and text each other all the time, and spend so much time using internet slang that they're starting to use that kind of writing in essays! Poor spelling is a big pet peeve for me.

Well, I my spell check button has completely disappeared so I can't use that anymore!!! =/
I guess they're just trying to post their question quickly, so they don't see if they made an error, or didn't realize it until it's too late!

I completely agree. Just take a look at the students--most of them are too stupid to do some of the work for themselves so they just go to Yahoo Answers. It's too bad THESE kids (or 99% of them) are the future of America.
