I told him to have Sweet Dreams before he went to bed and I was woke up at 3 am to screams of, "Dad, DAD!", because instead of having sweet dreams he had a nightmare. I told him if he had followed my instructions that wouldn't have happened. Should he be punished?

No he should not be punished. When the body is asleep the mind takes over. There is no way anyone has any control of what they dream about. You can't tell someone to have sweet dreams and expect it to happen all the time. Dreams are tricky and hard to understand. There is no telling what one person will dream about. The mind is sorting things out and that's why we have to certain dreams we do.

No! I am 11 years old and I have nightmare a lot. I wake up my mom and dad, and they comfort me!! You can't control dreams. Unless he was not sleeping, don't punish someone for that. Give a talk on whether he really slept or not. If he is telling the truth, whether he slept or not, understand him. But be sure to check on him when he is sleeping occasionally on a schedule so you come to terms on stuff like this.
