If so, which hard drive without costing a fortune is worth getting, what sort of memory capacity will I need? The computer only holds music, photos, games, so what sort of memory capacity should I be looking at? Only want to back everything up in case everything gets wiped out, then I'd be really peeved...

Its definately worth getting an external hard drive. I bought a 250 gig one last year, cost me £70.

The great thing about having it as everything my son and I has gets stored on there. Most of the time its switched off so its not going to fail anytime, fingers crossed.

This mean that we don't have to back anything up on out main pc's and we both re-install windows every 3 to 6 months to keep our laptops fresh and clean of all the crap you pick up when surfing the net.

Reinstallation of windows is now a simple process with all of our files being stored on the external. We even copy all of our set up files for things we have downloaded so easy to re-install when we reinstall our operating systems.

Buy one, you will get 160 gig now for about £50

It is the best idea to back up these files if they are important, but why don't you just by some dvd's and download onto them. You can get dvd's up to 4Gb and more for about 10-12 quid for 10 whereas a 100Gb hard drive could cost you up £60 - £80 . Stick 'em on dvd's and put them in a safe place. Either that or create a new partition on your existing hardrive using the partition magic program and keep them there. Buying an external hard drive is unnecessary there are so many cheaper options. Memory has got nothing to do with hard drives capacity has

we actually bought an external hard drive and it cost us 50 Maltese Liri (cos i'm maltese) which would translate to about 120 Euros (or 80 UK Pounds, or about 150 US Dollars)

it is worth it, i think, becuase we have so many pics that are precious to us, so many songs, and even important documents. What if u get a virus? It would devastate everything. Or if your pc is robbed? Or if your house catches fire (or some other disaster)? (so don't put your external hard drive in the same place near the pc lol).

Ours has a lot of memory, i think 250 Gb if i remember correctly, which btw is a lot more than we'll ever use, but for a a very little difference in price we paid for a lot more gigabytes and you never know, you might use it.

so...i recommend you buy one :)

I bought a Seagate 320gb external hard drive from Amazon for £80 bout 6 months ago (could be cheaper now). I use it to back up everything that I download or photos I have taken just in case something happens to my computer. I also use it to copy my DVD's onto which I do by using DVD Shrink. This helps me freeup space on my internal hard drive which I like to keep as free as possible.

Personally, I think that it was worth every penny and I would recommend one. You can get lower capacity ones just check out online retailers and see.

yes every hard drive will fail that is for certain it's just a matter of when, but maybe you could just store everything on something else that you already have? You can put almost anything on an I pod why not use that as your back up? assuming that it's big enough that is like 20gig. that would be my advice don't buy a whopping external when you can use something else and is cheaper and if you don't need 50gig why bother?

I dont think it's worth getting an external hardrive, first of all, ou probably won't spend frigging 50 gigs worth of photos and music and games. If you really want a hard drive, just buy one that is internal, put it in, it's not that hard, aand they are several times cheaper!

as long as you don't plan on disconnecting it all the time then yes but if the drive is only going to be used for backup on the one machine then just go and internal one... or if your feeling creative then make one you can buy the kits to do this, they cost between £10-£40 then just the price of the drive you want... don't go for anything less than 160gb... have a look at www.microdirect.co.uk

external hard drives are going down in price all the time, for example you can get a 500gb freecom external hard drive for only £94 from http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=266731&CatId=0
with this type of storage you would never need to upgrade again, and as its plug,n,play you can use it on any p.c in your house
"you never have enough storage space",as dvd,s and video,s can take up loads of space quite quickly
good luck
