I can't think of any characteristic off hand that would be universally shared by all animals that lay eggs.

Considering that everything from starfish, clams, mosquitoes and lobster to chickens, snakes and platypus lay eggs, that's a pretty diverse group.

Since it's from a radio show, I'm going to guess that their answer probably was fur, but as has already been shown, that answer is incorrect.

EDIT: I'd have to say that emucompboy below me has probably hit the nail right on the head (so to speak). While not all critters that have live birth have descended testes, there are indeed no egg laying species I'm aware of that possess that trait.

Descended testicles. Sorry to be crude, but this was a radio question, and I'd bet the answer they were looking for was "balls."

Descended testicles are a peculiarity of placental mammals, and one of my favorite arguments against Intelligent Design. What Intelligent Designer would place such important organs outside a protective bone cage, and require that they be kept at a temperature lower than the usual body temperature in order to function properly?

There are many answers here. Some mammals lay eggs so fur is not it. Birds lay eggs and are warm blooded so that isn't it. I would say a uterus....or something you know they don't have like a bank acount or a car.

i don't know, because duck billed platapuses (platapi) are mammals and have hair. and snakes have teethe like you said.

If it is not such an obvious answer then i would imagine it would be some reproductive organ.
