An excellent question!

We have engaged in an open door policy with China under the belief that exposure to dealing with the US and trading with us would help move them towards free markets, human rights and democracy. To some extent, that is succeeding, albeit slowly.

But for some reason, our politicians are so beholden to some special interest, that they believe Cuba would not. Why I can't imagine. Just imagine hundreds of thousands of US Tourists going to Cuba every year spending money and bringing our culture and influence with them. Once Cubans got a good look at who and what the Americans are and how prosperous we are, it would only help liberalize things there too.

It's politics.

Florida is a swing state crucial in Presidential elections. Dade County has the largest population. That's where most of the predominately Republican Cuban-Americans live. They hate the Castro regime and are fiercely against free trade with Cuba. The Rs don't want to risk losing the C-A vote.

On the other hand the Bush family has been close to China. Bush 41 was the Ambassador under Nixon. W's Uncle Prescott was Chairman of the America-China Chamber of Commerce for years. Bush 41 still gets 6 figure speaking fees for adressing Chinese Communist energy officials.

Political hypocrisy maybe? After all there is more money to be made from trade with China than with Cuba.

econmics, is the main reason, china has a open market for exploitation, as well as a labor force that can't be beat, also consider that if the US opened up Cuba relations again , there are a lot of cuban ex parroits that would raise hell, and have a voting block

It benefits us more economically to trade with China. Frankly, Cuba has little to offer in comparison with China and I don't think Castro will want to trade with us.

If they didn't the United States would be royally screwed. The US depends on China to buy bonds and such to keep the value of the US dollar up.

Cuba doesn't have a manufacturing base to work with.

I wish we wouldn't trade with them, quite honestly.
