20 weeks is the earliest you can get an amnio...threre is a 1 in 200 chance of miscarriage with an amnio. Its too late to do anything about the pregnancy then anyways, as you are too far along.

YES it is risky. I'm guessing your triple marker screen came back that she might have downs........Dont do it, that test is not reliable. They said my daughter did too, and she is fine.... I refused the test with this baby.... It just caused unneeded stress.

Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is generally performed as early as 15 weeks of pregnancy. Early in pregnancy it is used to detect chromosomal problems, including Down syndrome, neural tube defects (spina bifida) and occasionally other genetic diseases. Later in pregnancy it may be used to rule out an infection or to test for fetal lung maturity. Amniocentesis does not detect all birth defects or problems like sickle cell anemia or diabetes. During amniocentesis, a small amount of amniotic fluid is removed from the amniotic sac surrounding the fetus. A needle is inserted through the abdomen into the uterus and amniotic sac. Results are usually available in seven to 10 days.

Did the doctor order it or recommend it?

Most people do not get this done unless the doctor has seen something on the sonogram or a test comes back abnormal

I wouldnt get one unless it has been asked of you. There is risk including infection and loss of baby (miscarriage) club foot or injury to baby

Miscarriage is 1-100 chance

Many times women are told to get it because something comes back abnormal. The end up taking the test and nothing was ever wrong. This happened to my friend

Have you considered what you'd do if the baby did have Down syndrome? If you aren't going to abort, don't bother.
