Segregation still exists in many third world countries, as does discrimination and even ethnic cleansing. In our country, segregation is observed more infomally and surrupticiously. It is especially prevelant in the housing market, where people never get to have an interview because of an accent or a style of speaking over the phone. Even though segregation is against the law, a person may declare that a job is filled, an apartment rented, or an item sold because they would prefer not to deal with someone. They are really hurting themselves in many cases, but it's hard to get them to recognize that.

Socially, people tend to hang around with others that they feel comfortable with. Segregation can go both ways here, since people of a different race, creed, color, national origin or even sex, may feel uncomfortable around others that they are not familier with, no matter how welcome they are made to feel. Still, most of the seperation is due to an established group making an individual feel uncomfortable or unwelcome when they try to be accepted or fit in.

Some of the reasons are:

1. Fear of the unknown
2. Learned hatred (learned from parents, peer group, or other mentor figure)
3. Socialized hatred or fear. (It's just always been that way)
4. transferred negative experience.

Hope this helps

Does Segregation Still Exist

Well, I guess you could look at the real estate industry. There are still real estate companies to this day that are getting busted by the feds for steering minority customers to one area of the city and white customers to another. The federal housing agency routinely sends undercover officers to real estate companies and watches to see if a pattern develops. And sure enough ,in this day and age, some real estate companies are "segregating" homeowners by trying to send one group one way and one the other.

You might also look at big business. Take a look at the boards of directors of the Fortune 500 companies. Granted there are more and more blacks making it to corporate boards, but it's still by far a white, male dominated picture. It seems hard to believe the very few minorities or women have the qualifications to be on the boards of most of those companies, but it's still an "old boy network". That is a form of segregation.

And I guess the whole "don't ask, don't tell" thing in the army. If you're gay and out there and want to serve your country in a combat position, the military is pretty much saying "no". They might let you serve in another capacity, but as far as being with the troops in the field and being an announced gay man or woman, they're rather you didn't.

anyway, that's about all I can think of.

Men and women are commonly segregated for things like sports, public toilets, locker rooms and so on for obvious reasons. Children are segregated from adults in a number of activities also.

On the more negative side of things you've got the caste system in India that segregates people by their hereditary association with certain occupations like priests or servants. There are several other caste systems active throughout Africa and the middle east.

Segregation was outlawed by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, human beings still have the right to associate with whomever they desire, and many do. Segregation refers to the practice of the 50s and early 60s of banning non-whites from public places.

The funny thing is the most segregated day of the week is on Sundays. Most churches are still either white or black.
