How do I lift the grass and add a few inches of dirt under it? It only need to be done in some spots. There's a big drop off the driveway and a few other random spots that collect water. Do I need a special kind of shovel? Or would it be better to add dirt and seed and wait for the grass to come through?

Go with your second option Anne. Add some topsoil to cover all the lawn and it will eventually grow through it.

Don't put too much though as you will find that after a few seasons you'll be wanting to cut your lawn back as it will be too high.

you can just put your clean topsoil on top of the grass in the low spot. It may take a few months, but the grass will grow up through the dirt, and fill in nicely.

u need to have an order of topsoil delivered. sounds like a lot of work, might be easier to hire a landscaper since they have the machinery to re-grade your lawn.
