it all depends on definitions and the kids.

by safe do you mean physically?
it makes no difference, if a sexual predator is going to rape your kid, that predator is going to rape your kid. whether through myspace, aim, YAHOO, msn, the shopping mall, the grocery store.

and as long as your kid knows not to go into chatrooms and give out extremely lengthy and detailed information about themself(ves) then they'll be fine.

I've had AIM since I was 13. I have yet to be raped, murdered, robbed, threatened, harassed etc.

Yes, I've been using AIM since i was twelve and if someone is harassing you on it you can simply just block them off or warn them its the easier and more safer than using any other Instant Messaging systems.

It's not safe for anyone of any age. It's pure garbage. I advise against installing any AOL product if you haven't yet.

As long as they only talk with their friends. You can put it on a setting where if they receive instant messages from people they don't know that they can deny them. If somebody is bothering them they can block them.

of course, i've been using it since i was like 9. no problems :-] you can have safety features to make sure you know who you're talking to, or block out everyone who's not on your buddy list.
