For my Photojournalism class, we have to film a 3-5 min. documentary. I live in a city in Virginia, but there isn't much that happens around here. Basically I was wondering what should I do for a documentary? After seeing March of the Penguins, I don't think making a documentary can be much fun...lol. But I need something that will blow my professor away. What would be a good idea?

I hear you. I did a documentary about children of international students in a midwestern university, and another one on a traditional folk festival in a small city in Nicaragua. Another colleague did a short one on social networks. You don't have to look for a huge idea. Any idea can be turned into a documentary. What you need is an angle as to why a particular slice of life is noteworthy. It may even be about leisure, or about some hobby of yours; about a club or organization that you belong to; about an issue that you are passionate about, and it can even be a documentary about having trouble finding a subject for a documentary.
If you see what is out there, you'll realize that not all is like march of the penguins. Supersize me, for instance, was based on a very simple premise of what would happen to a man if he only ate mcdonalds for 30 days.

You said it yourself - nothing much happens where you live. What's the reason for that? Show everyone what's done for enjoyment in other places besides the mall, the movies, the drive-in fast food places, etc. And show them what happens when people don't have anything to occupy their free time.
