First and foremost, to make profits for the dealership.
The service and parts operations of most modern dealerships are where the majority of the profits are generated. The parts department, in a nutshell, supplies parts to the technicians who repair vehicles.
But it goes a bit further than that. Today's parts departments aren't merely stocking in one of everything; most car lines have far too many models and/or model years in their history to keep everything - even the most common parts - in stock.
The parts department must be capable of looking at trends in parts failure, both growing and shrinking, as well as common parts that customers may wish to upgrade or replace for cosmetic reasons and stock their warehousing appropriately. In addition, the parts personnel must have at the very least a basic working knowledge of all major systems of the car in order to more efficiently serve the technicians, as well as assist retail and wholesale parts customers over the phone or at the counter.
Bottom line:
If the parts department isn't doing their job, your car won't get fixed, and the technician and dealership won't make money.

They stock the parts that a technician needs to repair or maintain a vehicle.
The problem with many dealerships and shops is that they don't stock the right parts which is why a customer will always have to come back the next day.

To stock repair parts, to issue them to the mechanics repairing the cars and to know what to charge for them at the time of the car being picked up. In addition some parts departments offer a showroom where you can shop for additional accessories while your car is being repaired.

The parts dept. is a profit center...That's the only reason it's there. All dealerships are made up of several profit centers, sales, service, parts, body shop, rental fleet, finance dept., the purpose is the same for all......profit for the dealer..
