What is the easiest?

a basic centered box with everything contained, one column, 2 column, 3 column, anything else....

Any tips or tricks for a newbie?

Hats off to you for actually learning to do things the right way!

CSS is really intuitive most of the time, once you get used to it's little "ways"

It doesn't really matter which one of the above layouts that you start with, the secret is to keep the thing simple to start with, WITHIN whatever framework you choose. I would suggest going to Layout gala and pick something like http://blog.html.it/layoutgala/LayoutGala33.html this one to start playing with. Study the markup and work out how it was done. You can then experiment with changing things to see what happens ie does it break the layout, look better, whatever.

Just aspire to keep learning about it and follow the links given on the standard css showpiece sites, the best only link to the best generally.
