Im only asking because my doctor handles prental care and deliveries. My insurance will only cover one particular OB/GYN in the city that I live and I dont want to be so far away from the hospital I plan on delivering in. My mom said that all three of her kids were handled and delivered by her family physician and was wondering if there was anyone else who is not seeing an OB/GYN...

My family doctor also does deliveries and prenatal care. I have dealt with the two female OB's in the area and I'm not impressed with their bedside manner. My doctor is absolutely wonderful and has been with me for a midpregnancy stillbirth and 6 week miscarriage. I just with I had her for my first pregnancy!! She will be definitely delivering my baby, she doesn't have on-call times, she is always on call for her patients!!

I know how you feel, it's hard to switch dr. My family dr does my annual pap exams but when I got pregnant, she said I had to see a gyn doc since she didn't do deliveries. It's hard getting used to a new dr. When I went to see the ob/gyn she referred me to a high risk ob/gyn. If I just stuck it out with my family dr. she might not have referred me to the high risk specialist....but if she's is trained in that area as well and does deliveries and you both feel comfortable then go for it. Good luck and congrats!!

I started out using my family doc and switched to an OB at about 30 weeks. My family doc was starting to get on my nerves, she was very short in the office visits we had and was difficult to talk to. Also, there are 4 other docs in the office, and if she wasn't on call I wouldn't get her to deliver my baby. Also, she didn't perform C-Sections, so if I needed one, one of the other docs would have to be called in to do it. I didn't like the idea of having someone that knows nothing about me deliver my baby and if necessary do a C-Section. The OB I go to delivered me almost 23 years ago, and he's absolutely great. They rotate you through the other 2 OB's in the office so in case one of the others are on call they are familiar with your pregnancy. I just felt better being in the hands of a specialist :) Good luck to you!

FYI - If your "family doctor" treats prenatal patients and delivers babies then they are an OB/GYN. A doctor can be a "family practicioner" and an OB/GYN.
Anyways congrats, sounds like you have the best of both worlds!

My family physician is my OB/GYN. Check with your's, because many family physicians are trained in general prenatal care and delivery. Be sure to check with him/her if he/she is specialized in problem pregnancies, how many children they have delievered, and if they can preform C-sections if nessecary.

I wouldn't go to my family physician if I were pregnant. An OB/GYN is a specialist, and that's what you need when you are pregnant.
