Either buy another MATCHING 256 MB stick and an add-on graphics card or, if your board supports it, get one 512MB stick and an add-on graphics card. This would be the most beneficial.

Graphics cards don't use your conventional memory because they have their own built into the card.

I am running XP on 256 mb of ram and it works fine. The Internet connection is good and I can use multiple MS packages like word, excel, PPT, Access etc. Additional memory helps if you are watching DVDs and the like but I am not into that sort of things.

Vista i very resource hungry and unless you have latest powerful systems, you are likely to crawl!!

Any extra RAM is enough to make XP run faster than normal.
So doubling it will do the trick.

I would think that for a couple of weeks, you'll notice the difference til you get used to it.

I remember hearing that the breakpoint for RAM is 1GB, dont quote me, but I heard that anything over 1GB is such a vast area of RAM that your PC begins to take longer to look for the information it wants.

Time will tell how much extra speed you will get from your extra memory card. I can safely say that you do not have to worry about making your PC slower by adding more memory. However, I have learned over the years that you have to be suspicious of anyone or anything that promises more than it delivers.

memory(ram) is split into 2 catergorys in a p.c 1system and 2.video
system memory is the memory that is installed on the motherboard and runs applications,in your case this is 256mb ram
video memory is memory that comes on graphic cards and helps to run games, the higher the better
at the moment your graphics have to borrow 32mb from the system memory, thus reducing your system memory to 224mb,this kind of graphics are called intergrated
now you have won a 256mb graphic card(well done),your onboard graphics need to be disabled first,to do this restart your p.c and press delete at the start to enter bios, you then need to look for advanced chipset features, then look for a setting which has onboard wrote by it,adjust this by using (page up/page down)until you have agp or pci-express,this is what your bios will boot from, sometimes the setting may be differnet,it all depends on your bios, but the principle is the same, you need to stop your onboard graphics, you will also see a option for the amount of video memory, this needs to be disabled ,but sometimes this isnt possible completely so you need to reduce it to the lowest memory amount possible, normally 8mb...after all this remember to save and exit set up to save all these settings to cmos
when you boot up your new graphic card will have 256mb video ram and your system ram will have increased to 244mb,but dont despair allthough your system memory has only increased a bit,the amount of video memory will ease the amount of system memory having to be used,so a increase in performance will be noticed
so yes ,xp will go faster but more important your games will be faster(depending on your graphic card model)
a system memory upgrade would now be a good upgrade to do,visit crucial.com(http://www.crucial.com/) and run the online scanner to get areport on what memory your p.c takes and you acn even buy directly from them
well done on winning your graphic card and i hope this has helped you
good luck

for starters XP is SUPPOSED to run on 512Mb in the first place, so you'd only be normalising yourself (sort of). And the more ram the better the performance of the pc, and if you can win yourself even more ram than 512 go ahead cos money spent on ram is always always worth it! Go ahead and install the ram, and buy yourself more if you have the money.

Oh yes. It will make a tremendous difference. You should check your task manager to see how much memory is being used "commit charge" and try to keep it well below your physical memory limit.

512meg RAM is moderate~OK, speedwise.

It will make it way faster than you are used to, of course, but I reccomend getting another 512 so you have 1G. That will pretty much solve any problems you may have.

Yes of course it will increase the speed and also the memory to download other software programs.
