Rhode Island's name is really Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations. Nickname the Ocean State
Origin of state's name: Possibly named in honor of the Greek Island of Rhodes or was named Roode Eylandt by Adriaen Block, Dutch explorer, because of its red clay.

If you are asking about the Greek island of Rhodes,
" the island was said to be born of the union of Helios the sun god and the nymph Rhode, and the cities were named for their three sons. The rhoda is a pink hibiscus native to the island." Wikipedia

The name (pronounced "road island") is probably derived from the name Roode Eylandt given to it by Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, because of its red clay. The state's population is just over a million, so even though it's the smallest state in the U.S., it is only ranked 43rd in population.
