Any recomendations for hotels or inns in the Old Montreal area? Looking for something with parking included or with an inexpensive indoor parking garage nearby?

Also, any recomendations for dining? Looking for a place where locals hang out? Like best pizza places, gyros joints, diners... what have you ...

Thanks!

There are not really a lot of recognizably named hotels situated directly in the Old Port area of Montreal. This is a historic part of Montreal, and many trendy people have snapped up these areas for condos, lofts, and business offices.

The two closest hotel chains I know of are the Hotel Intercontinental Montreal on St. Antoine Street, and the Delta Downtown Hotel on University. I have been to the Delta (it used to be a Radisson) and is quite nice.

Otherwise you may be looking at an older building that has been converted into a hotel by its owner.

You can check out the Hotel St. James, Hotel XIX Siecle, or the Hotel Saint Sulpice. These all look like old charming hotels. But be ready to pay 2-3 times the cost of other hotels in Montreal. And I have never been there myself so don't know about the service or cleanliness.

As for local restaurants in the Old Port, you will find it hard to go wrong if you try just about any of them in the area. A few I have enjoyed (a big meat lover) are Gibby's, Steak-Frites St-Paul, Restaurant du Vieux Port, and the Keg.

If you are looking for tastes other than steak, you may want to look at other parts of Montreal. My favorites:

Pizza: Pizzeria Napoletana (in Little Italy)
Greek: Marvens, or Georges Souvlaki
Sushi: Kaizen (in Westmount)
Chinese: Piment Rouge, or any place in Chinatown
Smoked Meat: Schwartz's, or Dunn's
Ribs: Baton Rouge

Don't get a hotel room in downtown. they are all way too pricey and will try to screw you over just because you're american. A good hang out place is the "peel pub". Good beer and drinks at excellent prices. Also when you get your money changed over, go to a bank. Not a currancy exchange or a grocery store. A BANK. And stay out of East Saint Catherine. It's a "dirty" area.
