This is a common literary tactic--the back cover of the book should tell you that it's fiction.

I also thought the same thing the first time I read Leroux's book.

Hope you enjoyed it!

Claiming to be relating eyewitness testimony was common in Gothic novels. Other times, the author would claim to be translating an ancient manuscript. These tropes were just meant to add to the spookiness of the plot; it isn't to be taken seriously.

On a side note, there really is an underground "lake" under the opera house the novel is based on. If you watch the DVD of the latest movie, they show it.
